Starmer announced a sharp increase in the UK's defense spending.
The Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Keir Starmer, announced that there is an intention to increase defense spending to 2.5% of GDP by 2027 and to 3% in the long term. This decision has been made in light of the peaceful negotiations between the United States and Russia regarding the war in Ukraine and aims to support Ukraine and Europe.
To increase expenditures, the international aid budget will be cut, which will allow borrowing levels to remain unchanged. Starmer's statement indicates the UK's intention to lead other European countries in proposals for greater support for NATO under U.S. leadership.
Starmer also hopes to receive a 'guarantee' from the United States for any security assurances from Europe, which will be important for deterring Russia. He also stated that he is ready to provide British troops for security guarantees to Ukraine, but along with other European countries.
