Gripen Jets and Meteor Missiles Could Push Back Russian Air Power: Key Details.
Ukraine and Sweden Deepen Defense Ties
According to Espreso.tv: Ukraine's Defense Ministry has highlighted the strategic advantages of Swedish Gripen fighter jets and Meteor missiles in countering Russian aerial threats. During a working visit to Sweden on May 28, 2023, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed a declaration to expand defense cooperation between the two nations.
Why Gripen and Meteor Stand Out
Gripen aircraft can push Russian aviation farther from Ukrainian airspace. The Defense Ministry stressed that
“the Gripen expands the Air Force’s toolkit and helps build a more resilient, multi-layered air defense system”— underscoring the jets' role in strengthening Ukraine’s defensive capabilities.
Meanwhile, the Meteor missile ranks among the most powerful long-range air-to-air weapons in its class. It can engage targets at distances exceeding 100 km, with a maximum range of around 200 km. Accelerating to roughly 4,600 km/h, the Meteor is equipped with an active radar guidance system and a ramjet engine, making it a highly effective tool against airborne threats.
In summary, defense collaboration with Sweden—particularly through the deployment of Gripen jets and Meteor missiles—could significantly bolster Ukraine’s position in the ongoing confrontation with Russian air power.
This agreement marks a major step in strengthening military ties between Ukraine and Sweden. It is expected to enhance Ukraine’s defense readiness amid escalating threats from Russia. Beyond countering Russian aircraft, the Gripen and Meteor systems will help reinforce Ukraine’s overall air defense architecture—a critical need in modern combat scenarios.
