Career. Since 1995, Arbuzov has worked as an economist, department head, manager in the Donetsk branch of PrivatBank.

From 2000 - Director of the Konstantinovka branch of PrivatBank (Donetsk Region).

Since 2003, he held the position of Chairman of the Board of the Ukrainian Business Bank (UkrBiznesBank, until October 2003 - Shareholder Bank Donezckina, from 1993 to 1999 - Agricultural Bank). The headquarters of the bank is located in Donetsk. From 2003 to 2010, Alexander Papaika, who was appointed Chairman of the State Tax Service of Ukraine in March 2010, was Chairman of the Supervisory Board of UkrBiznesBank.

In 2005, he became a member of the party of Victor Yuschenko Our Ukraine.

From May 2010 - member of the Supervisory Board and from June to October 2010 - Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the State Bank UkrEximbank (appointed by the Cabinet's decision of Nikolai Azarov).

From September 1, 2010 - first deputy chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine Stelmach (before Arbuzov, from 2005, this position was held by Anatoly Shapovalov).

From December 23, 2010 - Chairman of the National Bank of Ukraine (on that day, the Ukrainian Parliament dismissed the former NBU head Volodymyr Stelmakh and supported the proposal to appoint Arbuzov according to President Yanukovych's presentation).

On December 24, 2012, appointed as the First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine by a decree of President Viktor Yanukovych.

On February 5, 2014, after the resignation of Nikolai Azarov, appointed as the acting Prime Minister of Ukraine.

On February 27, 2014, the Ukrainian Parliament dismissed Arbuzov from the position of First Deputy Prime Minister. His place was taken by Vitali Yarema.

On March 29, 2014 expelled from the Party of Regions. Arbuzov left Ukraine.

Criminal case. On May 6, the Main Investigative Department of the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine declared Arbuzov wanted. At the end of May, the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Ukraine did the same.

The Prosecutor General's Office began a pre-investigation regarding the abuse of NBU officials in the establishment of the banking television channel 'Bankenfernsehen'. The former NBU Chairman Sergey Arbuzov was informed of the suspicion under Art. 191 Part 5 (misappropriation, embezzlement, or disposal of property through abuse of power) of the Ukrainian Criminal Code. The involvement of other NBU officials in crimes is also being investigated.

Previously, the Prosecutor General's Office stated that the NBU leadership in June 2011 made the decision to create a television channel (LLC 'Bankenfernsehen'), which should cover the activities of the institution at the expense of the NBU with a charter capital of 10 million Hryvnias. In 2011-2012, significant funds from the state budget were allocated - more than 117 million Hryvnias for the operation of the television channel, which were spent on the purchase of equipment and the provision of services.

On February 15, 2016, the District Court of the city Kiev granted the request of the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine for an investigation related to the former First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Sergey Arbuzov, which enabled it in the future to issue an absentee conviction and sentence. On February 16, the Prosecutor General's Office of Ukraine began a special (absentee) procedure against Sergey Arbuzov, who is accused of misappropriating someone else's property through the abuse of his office in especially large amounts.

On January 4, 2020, Arbuzov was ordered pre-trial detention.

Family and connections. Mother - Valentina Arbuzova, chairwoman of the All-Ukrainian Development Bank registered by the National Bank of Ukraine in April 2009 (PJSC VBR, Bank represented by branches in Kiev and Donetsk). Previously, Arbuzova was the director of the Donetsk regional department of PrivatBank.

Sergei Arbuzov is married. Together with his wife Irina (born in 1970), they are raising two sons - Sergei (born in 1996) and Mikhail (born in 2004).

According to media reports, Arbuzov is friends with Alexander Yanukovich, the elder son of Ukrainian President Yanukovich. In December 2010, the president's son announced his intention to acquire 100% of the shares of PJSC VBR. In the spring of 2011, Alexander Yanukovich became the direct owner of VBR. Previously, he owned it indirectly - owning 100% of the shares was LLC Donsnabtara.
