Former Ukrainian Central Bank Chief Arbuzov Eyes Russian State Duma Seat: Key Details.
Sergei Arbuzov and the Upcoming State Duma Elections
According to Espreso.tv: Sergei Arbuzov, who previously led the National Bank of Ukraine and served as the country’s First Vice Prime Minister, is reportedly being considered as a candidate in the State Duma elections scheduled for September 18–20. His tenure as head of the central bank ran from 2010 to 2012, and he was appointed First Vice Prime Minister in December of that year. Arbuzov also acted as Ukraine’s Prime Minister from January 28 to February 27, 2014.
Following the Euromaidan protests, Arbuzov fled Ukraine. Since April 22, 2014, he has been on the wanted list of the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs. In March 2021, the European Union removed him from its sanctions list. However, in April 2025, Ukraine’s National Security and Defense Council imposed new sanctions against him.
Political Implications of Arbuzov’s Candidacy
The potential nomination of Sergei Arbuzov for a seat in the State Duma could mark a significant political development, given his controversial background and history. This situation also highlights the complex political landscape in Ukraine, where debates frequently arise over the return or political involvement of former officials.
The response from Ukrainian society and political institutions to such moves remains critical, as it could shape future relations between Ukraine and Russia.
