He debuted at the Olympic Games in 1998, but did not achieve high results. His first significant success came in 1999, when he climbed to the third step of the podium at one stage of the World Cup.
By the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics, Andrei Derizemlya had become the leader of the Ukrainian biathlon team. However, he was unable to show good results at his second Olympics as well.

In 2007, Andrei Derizemlya unexpectedly won a bronze medal at the World Championships and finished the season among the top thirty biathletes in the world.
Since then, he has rightly been considered a leader of his national team and one of the 30 best biathletes in the world (according to the results of the Cup competitions of the seasons). However, his performances are not characterized by stability - good results are sometimes followed by poor ones, although he consistently registers high positions throughout the season.
In the 2008/2009 season, Andrei Derizemlya was first (mass start) and second (pursuit race) once each, and also placed third four times in the sprint.
The sprint is actually Derizemlya's favorite biathlon discipline, although he is capable of showing high results in other events as well.
At the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, Canada, Andrei Derizemlya was a participant of the national team of Ukraine. On February 14, 2010, the athlete showed a high fifth result in the men's biathlon sprint (10 km) during the opening race (at that time, the best result among Ukrainian athletes at the XXI Winter Olympics).
