Nimrata Nikki Randhawa Haley - an American politician. Member of the South Carolina House of Representatives from 2005 to 2010. Governor of South Carolina since 2011, member of the Republican Party. 29th U.S. Permanent Representative to the UN (2017-2018).
Place of birth. Education. Nikki Haley was born on January 20, 1972, in Bamberg, South Carolina. Her parents, Dr. Ajit Singh Randhawa and Raj Kaur Randhawa, immigrated from the Indian district of Amritsar, Punjab. Her father taught biology at Wurz High School, and her mother ran her own business. She has two brothers, Mitti and Charan, and a sister, Simran. Haley graduated from a private high school in Orangeburg, South Carolina, and later earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Clemson University.
Career. Haley worked at FCR, a waste processing and recycling company, and then in 1994 she joined her family's business - Exotica International, which produced high-quality clothing. The family business quickly grew into a multimillion-dollar company. In 1998, Haley was appointed to the board of directors of the Orangeburg Chamber of Commerce (South Carolina), and in 2003 - to the board of directors of the Lexington Chamber of Commerce (South Carolina). Haley became treasurer of the National Association of Women Business Owners in 2003 and president in 2004. In Lexington, she organized fundraising efforts for the local hospital. Additionally, she is a member of the Lexington Medical Fund, the Lexington County Sheriff's Fund, and a member of the Lexington Rotary Club.

Political career. In 2004, Haley was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives. She became the first Indian-American woman to hold this position in South Carolina. She was re-elected in 2006 and then in 2008, defeating Democratic candidate Edgar Gomez with 83% of the vote. Haley served as secretary of the health, military, state, and local committees.
On May 14, 2009, Haley announced that she would run for governor of the state. Her candidacy was supported by Sarah Palin and the Tea Party Movement. On November 2, 2010, Haley won the general election, defeating Democratic candidate Vincent Sheheen with 51% of the vote compared to 47% for her opponent.
On November 4, 2014, she was re-elected, receiving 55.9% of the voters' votes, compared to 41.4% for Democratic opponent Vincent Sheheen.
On January 24, 2017, the U.S. Senate confirmed Nikki Haley's nomination as U.S. Ambassador to the UN, appointed by President Donald Trump, with support from 96 out of 100 senators. She was supported by a majority of Democratic senators because she did not support Republican efforts to reduce U.S. funding for the UN. Democratic senator Ben Cardin also noted that after the annexation of Crimea, Haley stated that the island 'is not Russian,' and expressed support for Ukrainian sovereignty.
On October 9, 2018, President Donald Trump announced that Haley would officially leave her position by the end of 2018.
Views. Haley is a typical conservative. She is anti-abortion and consistently votes for laws restricting abortion and protecting the lives of unborn children. Haley believes that funds allocated for public education could be used more effectively. She proposed a plan where teacher pay should be determined not only by experience and qualifications but also by job performance. Their performance evaluation should be determined by ratings and reports from supervisors, students, and parents. Haley also supports tax cuts and mandatory use of photo ID during elections.
At the same time, in 2015, she led the removal of the Confederate flag from the South Carolina Statehouse (the flag of slave states from the Civil War era, which is still displayed on institutional buildings in some U.S. states).
Family. Haley was born and raised in a Sikh family. On September 6, 1996, she married Michael Haley. The ceremonies took place in both a Methodist church and a Sikh gurdwara. Haley identifies as a Christian, but out of respect for her parents' culture, she participates in both Methodist and Sikh worship. Michael Haley is a federal official in the U.S. Army Corps and an officer in the South Carolina National Guard.
The couple has two children, Rena and Nalin.
Haley's brother, Mitti, was an officer and served in the U.S. Army for 20 years.
