Gary Leonard Oldman is a British actor, director, producer, and musician. Oldman gained fame after playing lead roles in the films 'Sid and Nancy' and 'Rosencrantz & Guildenstern', for which he was critically acclaimed. In the 1990s, he appeared in many popular films, portraying dark and morally ambiguous characters. In the 2000s, Oldman was featured in two successful franchises: the Harry Potter series and Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.
Gary Oldman was born on March 21, 1958, in London. His mother Kathleen Cheriton was an Irish housewife, and his father Leonard Bertram Oldman was a sailor and welder. As a child, Gary played the piano and sang but soon decided on an acting career.
After graduating from the Rose Bruford College of Theatre & Performance in 1978, Oldman worked at the Greenwich Young People's Theatre and received several awards, including Time Out's Fringe Award for Best Newcomer and the British Theatre Association's Drama Magazine Award for Best Actor.
In 1986, Gary Oldman received his first significant role in the film 'Sid and Nancy', in which he played the bassist of the Sex Pistols. His outstanding performance brought him great popularity, and one of the former band members, John Lydon, referred to Oldman as an amazing actor.
In the 1990s, Gary Oldman starred in films such as 'JFK - The Dallas Conspiracy', 'Bram Stoker's Dracula', 'Léon – The Professional', 'The Fifth Element', and others, where he portrayed various characters. His role in 'Léon - The Professional' earned him his only Oscar nomination.
Later, Oldman appeared in the Harry Potter films as the wizard Sirius Black and in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy as the police officer James Gordon. In 2017, Gary Oldman portrayed Winston Churchill in the film 'Darkest Hour', for which he received much praise from critics.
Apart from his acting career, Gary Oldman has also worked as a director. In 1997, he made his first film 'Nil by Mouth', for which he received the BAFTA Award. Oldman was interested in music from a young age, played the piano, and composed music for film soundtracks.
Oldman has been married five times and has four sons. His award-winning role was the portrayal of George Smiley in the film 'Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy'.
