Nancy Pelosi - American politician, member of the United States House of Representatives (since 1993) from California's 8th congressional district (San Francisco), Democratic party leader in the House (since 2003). Since 2019, she has been the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States, having previously held this position from 2007 to 2011.

Place of birth, education. She was born on March 26, 1940, in Baltimore, Maryland, in a family of Italian immigrants. Her father, Democrat Thomas D'Alesandro Jr., was a congressman from Maryland and mayor of Baltimore. Her brother was also mayor of Baltimore from 1967-1971.

In 1962, she graduated from Trinity Washington University with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science.

Political career. In 1976, Pelosi was elected as a member of the Democratic National Committee from California and held this position for 20 years. In 1977, she became chair of the party in Northern California and later the Democratic Party of California.

Nancy Pelosi worked from 1985 to 1986 in the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and ran for chair of the Democratic National Committee elections at that time but was unable to win.

On June 2, 1987 she won the election for the US Congress from the 8th district in San Francisco - a district that has voted Democratic since 1949. Pelosi was re-elected to Congress with no less than 75% of the votes.

In 2001 Pelosi was elected minority whip in the US Congress - this is the second highest elected position after the party leader. In 2003, she assumed the position of party leader.

She served on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence and on the Budget Committee. After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, she led the inquiry in Congress into the work of the intelligence agencies and drafted a bill to establish an independent commission to investigate the work of the federal government - the '9/11 Commission'.

Nancy Pelosi was one of the fiercest critics of the George W. Bush administration and later of California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger.

On January 4, 2007 Pelosi was elected Speaker of the House of Representatives of the United States, being the first woman to hold this position in the country's history. Pelosi became the highest-ranking woman in American history when she took office, ranking third after the President and Vice President of the USA. At that time, Democrats regained the majority in the House of the American Parliament after twelve years in opposition.

In the House midterm elections, Democrats lost the majority, thus the position of Speaker went to Republicans and Pelosi lost it. From January 3, 2011, she was the minority leader in the House.

In 2018, in the midterm elections for the House, Democrats regained the majority in this governmental body, which is why Pelosi took on the position of Speaker of the House again.

In 2019, Pelosi de facto led the impeachment proceedings against Donald Trump in the House. The House impeached Trump, but the president was not removed from office as the Senate did not support the removal.

On January 3, 2021, Pelosi was re-elected Speaker of the House for a fourth term.

On May 1, 2022, she visited Kyiv.

On August 2, 2021, a military aircraft, on board which Pelosi was, successfully landed at the presidential military airport 'Sunshine' in Taipei, the capital of Taiwan. Pelosi was the highest-ranking American politician to visit the island in the last 25 years.

Awards. Commander of the Grand Cross of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic (June 2, 2007).

Order of Princess Olga III Class (Ukraine, April 30, 2022) - for significant personal contribution to the strengthening of Ukrainian-American intergovernmental cooperation, support of a sovereign, independent, and democratic Ukraine.

Family. Since 1963, Nancy Pelosi has been married to businessman Paul Pelosi. They have five children: Nancy Corinne, Christine, Jacqueline, Paul, and Alexandra, as well as nine grandchildren. Alexandra, a journalist, reported on Republican George Bush's 2000 campaign and later produced the documentary 'Travels with George'. Her second daughter, Christine Pelosi, published the book 'Campaign Leading Children's Camps: Foundations for Future Leaders' in 2007.

Nancy Pelosi lives in the Pacific Heights neighborhood of San Francisco.
