Biography
Date of Birth: 02.05.1944
Place of Birth. Education. Born in the village of Lipjatin, Chmelnytskyi District, Vinnytsia Oblast. In 1969, he graduated from the medical faculty of Uzhhorod State University (general medicine, physician).
Career. 1961-1963 - Teacher at the eight-grade school in Lipjatins.
1966-1969 - Worked at the Uzhhorod District Neurological Hospital.
1969-1970 - Anesthetist at the Central District Hospital in Veliko Berezne.
1970-1972 - Clinical aspirant at the Kyiv Research Institute of Neurosurgery.
1972-1974 - Aspirant, neurosurgeon at the Kyiv Research Institute of Neurosurgery.
1974-1983 - Assistant doctor at the Institute for Advanced Training of Physicians in Kyiv.
1983-1993 - Senior scientist at the Kyiv Research Institute of Neurosurgery, chief neurosurgeon of the Health Department in Kyiv.
1993-1995 - Director of the Emergency Neurosurgery Clinic, Deputy Director for Research of the Scientific and Practical Union for Emergency Medicine and Disaster Medicine.
1995-2002 - Head of the Department at the Kyiv Medical Academy of Postgraduate Education named after P. Shupik.
2002-2005 - Member of the Ukrainian Parliament of the IV convocation, member of the Our Ukraine faction. Chaired the Health Committee of the Parliament. Entered the Parliament as a member of the 'Reforms and Order' party led by Viktor Pinzenik and later joined the People's Union Our Ukraine.
From February to September 2005, he was replaced as Minister of Health by Yuriy Poliachenko. The politician did not have time to rejuvenate the domestic healthcare system. However, his tenure was marked by some radical and scandalous decisions and innovations (such as the mandatory service of medical school graduates in villages or the sale of medications only by prescription).
After the resignation of the Tymoshenko government, Mykola Polischuk worked in the Spine Pathology Department of the Romodanov Institute of Neurosurgery of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine. His successor as Minister of Health was Yuriy Poliachenko.
From September 2006 to March 2010 - Advisor to Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko. Dismissed by the new President Viktor Yanukovych.
Scientific Activity. Author and co-author of about 300 scientific works, including 13 monographs, 18 inventions, 63 rationalization proposals.
Awards. Doctor of Medicine (1987). Professor (1997). Honorary member of the Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine (1997). Honored Scientist of Ukraine (1994). Awarded the Order of Prince Yaroslav the Wise, 5th class (2004).
