Career. In the 1980s to the early 1990s (after serving in the Soviet Army from 1983-1985), he was the head of several organizations and companies in the non-state sector.

On December 27, 2011, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation (for Putin), from May 21, 2012, for Medvedev.

Involvement in Russia's Aggression Against Ukraine. On March 17, 2014, international sanctions were imposed on Surkov due to Russia's aggression against Ukraine. The US government banned him from entering the country and placed assets and property in the United States under arrest, as he was one of the key senior officials in the Russian government responsible for the violation of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity. Similar measures were taken by the Canadian government. He is also included in the sanctions lists of the European Union, Australia, Switzerland, and Ukraine.
