Boris Ivanovych Tarasiuk - Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the Council of Europe (since December 24, 2019). Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine from 1998-2000 and 2005-2007. Member of the Ukrainian Parliament of the VIII convocation from the Fatherland party.
Place of Birth. Education. Born in Dzherzhynsk, Zhytomyr Oblast. Studied the profession of technician-telecommunications mechanic at the Kyiv Technical School of Communications from 1964 to 1968. In 1975, Tarasiuk graduated with honors from the Faculty of International Relations and International Law at Kyiv University.
Diplomatic Career. From 1975 to 1981 Attaché, 3rd Secretary, 2nd Secretary, 1st Secretary at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Ukrainian SSR. From 1981 to 1986, 2nd Secretary, 1st Secretary of the Permanent Representation of Ukraine to the United Nations (New York). From 1986 to 1987, 1st Secretary in the department of international organizations of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Ukrainian SSR. From 1987 to 1990 instructor in the field of international relations of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Ukraine.
From 1990 to 1991 advisor, deputy head of the office of the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine. From 1991 to 1992 head of the secretariat of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine - head of the political analysis and coordination department. From March 1992 deputy minister of foreign affairs, chairman of the National Committee of Ukraine on disarmament issues and chairman of the state intergovernmental commission for Ukraine's accession to the Council of Europe. From December 1994 to September 1995, First Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.
From 1995 to 1998 he was the Ambassador of Ukraine to the Kingdom of Belgium, to the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and to the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg (concurrently) and head of Ukraine's mission to NATO.
Political Career. In April 1998 he was first appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs. He held the position until September 2000. In the spring of 2002, he was elected People's Deputy for the Our Ukraine bloc. He became the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee for European Integration. In March 2006 he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada for the second time (again on the Our Ukraine list).
In February 2005 Tarasiuk was appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs for the second time (in the government of Yulia Tymoshenko). In September of that year, he was appointed to the same position in the government of Yuriy Yekhanurov.
On August 4, 2006, he was appointed head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in the government of Viktor Yanukovych (by the Verkhovna Rada upon the President's proposal). On December 1, 2006, he was dismissed by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine.
Tarasiuk is a member of the People's Movement of Ukraine, and in May 2003 he was elected chairman of this political party. In spring 2007, he formed an alliance with the Ukrainian People's Party (Chairman - Yuriy Kostenko), the Ukrainian Republican Party Sabor (Chairman - Anatoliy Matviyenko) and established the Movement - Ukrainian Rights bloc, which subsequently merged into the pro-presidential bloc of democratic forces Our Ukraine - National Self-Defense during the snap parliamentary elections.
From December 2012 to November 2014, he was a member of the Ukrainian Parliament of the VII convocation of the People's Front (No. 9 on the list). Deputy Chairman of the Fatherland faction. Member of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on European Integration. Nonpartisan.
On February 27, 2014, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine for European Integration in the government of Arseniy Yatsenyuk.
During the early parliamentary elections of 2014, he was elected to the Verkhovna Rada of the VIII convocation as No. 12 on the Fatherland party list. Member of the Fatherland faction. Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Affairs, Chairman of the Subcommittee on Legislation and Monitoring of Diplomatic Service Activities.
On December 24, 2019, the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, appointed Boris Tarasiuk as the permanent representative of Ukraine to the Council of Europe.
Social Activities, Awards. Member of the Ukrainian-American Advisory Board and the Board of the Institute for East-West Studies (New York), honorary doctor of Ivan Franko National University of Lviv. Founder of the expert organization for non-state cooperation Institute for Euro-Atlantic Cooperation. Awarded the Order of 'For Merits' in three degrees. Diplomatic rank - Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of Ukraine (since 1992).
Family, Hobbies. Married. Has one son and two daughters. Hobbies - fishing, tennis, billiards. Enjoys cooking.
