Poroshenko Declines Poland’s Highest Honor in Solidarity with Ukrainian Soldiers.
Rejecting the Order of the White Eagle
According to Espreso.tv: In a move meant to back Ukrainian troops and protest the stripping of Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s award, Petro Poroshenko has announced he will not accept the Order of the White Eagle. He stressed the need to resolve the strained ties between Ukraine and Poland. Poroshenko’s decision is part of a broader pattern, with several other Ukrainian politicians also returning or rejecting Polish honors.
Ukrainian Politicians Respond
On June 19, 2023, the head of the Polish administration, Nawrocki, decided to revoke the Order of the White Eagle from Volodymyr Zelenskyy. This move sparked outrage among Ukrainian politicians, who argue it could damage bilateral relations. Specifically:
- Kyrylo Budanov also turned down the Golden Officer’s Cross of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.
- Andrii Sybiha stated his intention to return the Commander’s Cross with Star of the Order of Merit of the Republic of Poland.
- Vasyl Bodnar announced he would decline a Polish award.
Additionally, Leonid Kuchma and Viktor Yushchenko have expressed plans to return the order. Borys Tarasyuk also declared he would give back his award.
That is why I have decided to decline the Order of the White Eagle.
Petro Poroshenko
Poroshenko emphasized that 'any crisis between Kyiv and Warsaw today is not just a diplomatic problem—it is a security issue.' He added, 'The goal now is not to deepen the conflict, but to end it,' and called for reconciliation: 'We forgive and ask for forgiveness.'
These rejections and returns of awards by Ukrainian politicians highlight growing unease over Ukraine-Poland relations and a strong desire to show support for Ukrainian soldiers during this difficult period. The events underscore the need for diplomatic efforts to stabilize bilateral ties, which could affect regional security and cooperation amid the current geopolitical landscape. Refusing such honors serves as a symbolic gesture, reflecting Ukrainian leaders’ solidarity with national interests and the country’s pressing needs.
