Kassym-Jomart Kemeluly Tokayev - Kazakh politician and diplomat. President of the Republic of Kazakhstan since March 20, 2019.
Place of Birth. Education. Born on May 17, 1953 in Alma-Ata, Kazakhstan. His father, Kemel Tokayevich Tokayev, was a well-known Kazakh writer. His mother, Turar Shabarbaeva, worked at the Alma-Ata Institute of Foreign Languages. Tokayev hails from the Kazakh Kushik line of the Jalair tribe of the Ordzhonikidze Juz.
In 1970, he began his studies at MGIMO of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR, where he was sent for a six-month internship at the USSR Embassy in China in his fifth year of study.

In 1991, he entered the Diplomatic Academy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR to take a course for the advanced training of senior diplomats.
Career. In 1975, he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR and was sent to the Soviet Embassy in Singapore. In 1979, he returned to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR. In 1983, he went for a ten-month internship at the Beijing Linguistics Institute in China.
From 1984 to 1985, he worked at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the USSR and was then sent to the Soviet Embassy in Beijing, where he worked until 1991 in positions as second secretary, first secretary, and adviser. In 1992, he took up the post of Deputy Foreign Minister of Kazakhstan. In 1993, he became First Deputy Foreign Minister and in 1994, head of the ministry.
In March 1999, he was appointed Deputy Prime Minister. In October of the same year, he took the helm of the government. In January 2002, he resigned and was subsequently appointed head of a ministry - the Ministry of Foreign Affairs - serving in total for 10 years (1994-1999, 2002-2007) as Minister of Foreign Affairs. During his tenure as Foreign Minister, he played an active role in the nuclear non-proliferation process. In 2007, he was elected President of the Senate of Kazakhstan. In 2008, he became Vice President of the OSCE Parliamentary Assembly.
In March 2011, Tokayev was appointed Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Director-General of the United Nations Office at Geneva, and Personal Representative of the United Nations Secretary-General to the Conference on Disarmament. On October 16, 2013, he was elected President of the Senate of the Republic of Kazakhstan.
Since March 20, 2019, he has been the acting President of the Republic of Kazakhstan. On March 19, 2019, after Nursultan Nazarbayev announced that he was resigning as President of Kazakhstan, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev was appointed acting head of state. He will lead the country in accordance with the Constitution until the term of the first President Nursultan Nazarbayev ends. The next presidential elections in Kazakhstan are set to take place in 2019.
On June 10, 2019, Kassym-Jomart Tokayev won the extraordinary presidential elections.
On September 3, 2022, Kasim Tokayev announced the holding of early elections in the country, which could allow him to be re-elected with an extended term. On November 20, 2022, he won the elections with a result of 81.31%.
Awards. Kassym-Jomart Tokayev holds a doctorate in political science and is the author of many works on international relations. He is a full member of the World Academy of Humanities and Natural Sciences, a member of the 'Wise Men' Council of the Munich Security Conference, an honorary professor at Shenzhen University, an honorary professor and honorary doctor of the Diplomatic Academy of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as well as a member of its board, and honorary president of the Kazakhstan Council for International Relations.
