Biography of Oleksandr Turchynov
Oleksandr Valentynovych Turchynov was born on March 31, 1964. He is a well-known Ukrainian politician and scholar who has held several important positions in Ukraine's state bodies.
Oleksandr Turchynov served as the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine from 2014 to 2019. He was also the First Deputy Prime Minister in Yulia Tymoshenko's Cabinet from 2007 to 2010 and the Head of the Security Service of Ukraine from February 4 to September 8, 2005. Oleksandr Turchynov was a Member of the Ukrainian Parliament from 1998 to 2014. From February 22 to November 27, 2014, he chaired the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, and from February 23 to June 7, 2014, he acted as the President of Ukraine.
Oleksandr Turchynov was born in the city of Dnipropetrovsk. He graduated from the Dnipropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute in 1986. After graduation, he worked as a roller and foreman at the Kryvorizhstal plant and later engaged in Komsomol activities. From 1987 to 1989, he was the Secretary of the District Committee and the Propaganda Department of the Dnipropetrovsk Regional Committee of the LKSMU. Oleksandr Turchynov was one of the coordinators of the Democratic Platform in the CPSU, which fought for the renewal and decentralization of the Communist Party.
After that, he founded and headed the Ukrainian branch of the IMA-Press information agency, which published books and newspapers. He also led the Institute of International Relations, Economics, Politics, and Law. Oleksandr Turchynov had experience working in state bodies, in particular, he was an economic advisor to the government of Leonid Kuchma.
Oleksandr Turchynov is actively involved in political activities. He was a member of the All-Ukrainian Association Gromada and a co-founder of the All-Ukrainian Association Batkivshchyna. He held the position of First Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine and was also a member of parliament.
In 2014, Oleksandr Turchynov was appointed Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and Acting President. He was one of the leaders of the Orange Revolution, which led to Viktor Yushchenko's victory in the presidential elections.
Oleksandr Turchynov also served as the Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine during Petro Poroshenko's presidency. In 2019, he resigned from this position. Later, Oleksandr Turchynov headed the electoral headquarters of the European Solidarity party.
Besides his political career, Oleksandr Turchynov holds a Doctorate in Economics and is a Professor. He is the author of numerous scientific works and monographs.
Oleksandr Turchynov is a family man, he is married and has a son.
