Boarding Pass Code: What SSSS and Other Notations Mean.
According to The Sun: Airline passengers should be aware of one code on their boarding pass that could result in receiving the worst seat on board.
Despite their small form factor, these tickets contain a wealth of information about the flight that can influence your seat assignment. A standard boarding pass typically features a SEQ number, known as the 'sequence number.'
This number determines the order of passenger boarding. If your ticket has SEQ08, it means you are the eighth person to check in for the flight. With this information, you can figure out what seat you have been assigned.
Some airlines assign seats based on the order of passenger check-in. This means that travelers who check in last may end up with a less desirable seat.
“This SEQ code can also cause issues if a passenger checks in among the last and the flight is full,” sources say.
Groups
There are also specific codes on boarding passes that airlines, such as Air Canada and Finnair, use. This code simplifies the boarding process.
It typically looks like “Group 1” or “Group 2,” and staff announce them near the boarding gate. Groups are often formed based on factors such as families, passengers with disabilities, and class of service.
Enhanced Screening
Another popular code on boarding passes is “SSSS.” This signifies additional security screening, implemented by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
Passengers who see this code on their ticket can expect 'enhanced' screening that will take more time than usual.
Ticket Resale
Some airlines may re-sell seats on their flights. If all passengers on a flight are present and no one is no-showing, those who check in last risk being rerouted to another flight.
Additionally, boarding passes include a booking or reservation number. The Passenger Name Record (PNR) is a six-digit alphanumeric code displayed on each boarding pass.
This random sequence identifies you as a unique passenger, which is very useful in situations where multiple people have the same names. Each PNR contains detailed travel itinerary information, including flight details, meal preferences, and loyalty program status.
AlamyKnowing these codes can significantly ease your travel. Be attentive during check-in and use all provided information to secure the most comfortable seat on the aircraft. Remember, the order of check-in and other details can impact your flying experience.
