According to ТСН: Although there are no strict rules, experts recommend following ancient traditions and warn: rushing or keeping the tree too long can lead to troubles.

When to Take Down the Christmas Tree

David Sumner from Christmas Tree World explains that some people do not want to say goodbye to the festive atmosphere while others prefer to restore the usual look of their home sooner. According to ancient tradition, the perfect day to take down the Christmas tree is Twelfth Night or Three Kings' Day, which symbolizes the end of the Christmas period.

In 2026, Twelfth Night falls on the evening of January 5th — exactly 12 days after Christmas. Sumner emphasizes that taking down decorations before or after this day is considered bad luck, so January 5th is regarded as the 'perfect date.'

The practical aspect is also important. Horticulturist Lauren Taylor advises paying attention to the operating times of Christmas tree recycling points, as in many cities they only accept trees from late December to mid-January. If you miss this window, disposing of the tree may become more difficult.

Moreover, a dried-out tree poses a serious fire hazard: the drier the tree, the faster it may ignite even from an overheated garland or a small spark. Therefore, experts recommend not delaying the cleaning process.

For owners of artificial trees, there are no such risks, but proper storage can extend the lifespan of the decoration. Mac Harman, CEO of the Balsam Hill brand, advises to tightly press the branches to the trunk, turn the sections upside down, and secure them with ribbon. The tree should be stored in a sturdy cover made of dense material, in a dry and cool place.

So, despite differing preferences, adhering to traditions and practical advice not only helps create coziness at home but also ensures safety during the holiday season. The time for taking down the tree may seem insignificant, but it is important to remember that this is not only a matter of aesthetics but also of safety.
