Latvian Coach Files Protest Over Ukrainian Athlete's Pre-Olympic Disqualification.
Latvian Coach Backs Heraskevych Following Disqualification Ahead of 2026 Olympics
According to Novyny.live: Ivo Steinbergs, the head coach of the Latvian skeleton team, has formally protested the disqualification of Ukrainian athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych just before the 2026 Winter Olympics. The sporting community was outraged when Heraskevych was disqualified a mere 30-40 minutes before the start of his first run. Skeleton is a high-speed winter sport where athletes race head-first down an icy track, and such last-minute decisions are highly disruptive.
The disqualification was issued for violating International Olympic Committee (IOC) requirements regarding the use of a 'memorial helmet'. Immediately following the announcement, Steinbergs submitted an official protest to the International Bobsleigh and Skeleton Federation (IBSF). The coach stated that at least three other nations have agreed to sign his protest, demonstrating significant international support for Heraskevych's case.
“Yes, it was an unpleasant surprise that they did this right before the competition.”

Steinbergs also emphasized that the disqualification severely damaged Heraskevych's chances of winning an Olympic medal, stating: “Essentially, they stole Vladyslav's chance at an Olympic medal… It's terrible.” This incident has sparked widespread discussion within sports circles and among fans who support the Ukrainian athlete.
Ivo Steinbergs's protest not only highlights the critical importance of fairness in sports but also shows a notable solidarity between nations amidst intense international competition. Incidents like Heraskevych's disqualification underscore how issues of rule adherence and sports ethics remain pressing and require attention from all stakeholders.
The ongoing development of this situation could have serious repercussions for the reputation of both the IOC and the competitions themselves, as trust in sporting governing bodies is crucial for the future integrity of the Olympic movement.
