For the first time in three years: a real winter weather is expected in Ukraine for Christmas.
According to ТСН: For the first time in three years, Ukrainians will be able to celebrate Christmas on December 25 in winter weather.
This was reported by the head of the Cherkasy Regional Hydrometeorological Center Vitaliy Postryhany.
Weather for the weekend
According to forecasts, a cold spell will begin on December 24, and the average daily temperature will drop below 0°.
On the weekend of December 20-21, a monotonous autumn weather is expected under the influence of the anticyclone 'Frieda'. Complete cloudiness and fogs are forecasted; at night, the air temperature will be around 0°, during the day 3-5° Celsius.
Upcoming changes in the weather
'At the beginning of the new working week, on December 22-23, a new anticyclone filled with cold air will form over Scandinavia and the Norwegian Sea. It will become a barrier for Atlantic cyclones and block the west-east transfer of warm air masses. However, no significant changes in the weather are expected yet. The temperature during the day will fluctuate from -2° to 3° Celsius,' noted the forecaster.
Moreover, Postryhany predicts 'a sharp drop into Arctic cold', although a stable snow cover should not be expected; only possible snow in some areas.
Winter solstice and winter traditions
'The current week is the darkest of the year. On December 21, 2025, at 5:03 PM Kyiv time, the Sun will reach its lowest point relative to the Earth’s horizon, marking the winter solstice. The night from December 20 to 21 will be the longest of the year, and December 21 will be the shortest day, lasting only 8 hours. But already on December 25, the days will begin to lengthen. 'The Sun is for summer, winter is for frost,' is what people used to say. We continue to monitor the development of the cold scenario,' Vitaliy Postryhany noted.
Earlier, forecaster Natalia Didenko reported that a cold spell would start in Ukraine on Christmas, December 25.
This cold spell on Christmas is significant for the country, as it is traditionally associated with snowy winter and warm family gatherings in Ukrainian culture. Winter, with its cold and holidays, is already at the doorstep, and the weather changes may affect the festive traditions and plans of Ukrainians.
