Archbishop of Canterbury resigns amid sex abuse scandal.

The Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has announced that he will resign following criticism of his inaction in the case of sexual abuse of boys.

In his official statement, Welby expressed sympathy for the victims and those who suffered violence.

According to a report by Reuters, Welby was called to resign after a report was published citing his inaction in relation to John Smyth, a lawyer who ran Christian camps for children in Dorset, where Welby once worked.

Smyth was accused of abusing children for 40 years, thousands of boys and teenagers became his victims. He moved to Africa in 1984, where he allegedly continued to abuse minors until he died in 2018.

Welby admitted his personal and institutional responsibility for the tragic events and announced his resignation.

This event is the first time in history that an Anglican Archbishop resigns due to a violence scandal.
