First case of new strain of monkeypox recorded in Europe.
In Sweden, the first case of the monkeypox strain called Clade I, which is considered more contagious and deadly than the previous variant, was detected outside of Africa. This was reported by SVT.
Olivia Wigzell, head of the Swedish Public Health Agency, said that the person was infected while in a part of Africa where a major outbreak of Clade I is occurring.
The fact that a patient with monkeypox is being treated in Sweden does not pose a risk to the general population.
Wigzell also noted that officials will soon provide an updated assessment of the epidemiological situation.
Magnus Gisslen, state epidemiologist of Sweden, emphasized the seriousness of the infection. He called the emergence of Clade I in Sweden a "disturbing development of events".
The fact that we have now recorded a case in Sweden is not unexpected, as this is an epidemic that we have been monitoring for a long Time. The risks should neither be overestimated nor underestimated.
The day before, the World Health Organization (WHO) declared that the rapid spread of monkeypox in African countries is a global health emergency.
