A hurricane recorded in Finland for the first time. Severe weather left thousands of homes without electricity.
In western Finland, the wind reached hurricane levels for the first Time in history, leaving 17,000 homes without electricity. This is reported by Yle.
In the cities of Rauma and Pori, the average wind speed reached hurricane values – 33.5 meters per second and 30.3 meters per second, respectively. In Finland, a hurricane is considered wind with an average speed of at least 33 meters per second.
This is the first time a real hurricane has been recorded in Finland, meteorologist Matti Huutonen reported.
"Throughout the entire history of observations, such indicators have not been recorded, this is really rare," said Tuomo Bergman, a meteorologist from the Meteorological Institute.
On Friday evening, about 40,000 homes in western and southern Finland were without electricity. As of Saturday, 17,000 homes remained without power.
Fire Chief Kari Kankaapää from the Satakunta rescue service noted that rescuers were most often called due to fallen trees and damaged property.
It is predicted that on Sunday a new powerful cyclone will come to Finland, following roughly the same route. Therefore, there is a possibility of a repeat hurricane.
Deaths in Spain and Bosnia and Herzegovina
It is officially confirmed that more than 200 people died in southwestern Spain, which suffered from catastrophic floods.
In the municipality of Jablanica in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where a flood occurred, 16 people died, and three more bodies were found in the city of Fojnica. Heavy rains that began on Friday night caused the flooding of several towns in the central and southern parts of the country, destroying homes and farm buildings.
It is necessary to mention that global warming causes the appearance of powerful rains, hurricanes, and climate change.
