The event became a significant moment for both the local community and participants, highlighting the sport’s growing reach. Petanque, a precision ball game similar to bocce, has been steadily gaining enthusiasts across the country.

Veterans and People with Hearing Loss Join for the First Time

This year’s tournament stood out as the first in history to feature veterans of the Russian-Ukrainian war and people with hearing impairments. Organizer Liliia Lytvyn stated:

“We have more than 100 participants, including veterans of the Russia-Ukraine war and individuals with hearing loss. This marks their first appearance at a national championship. We take great pride in bringing together diverse groups who compete on a level playing field.”

Sport has proven vital for many competitors. Ivan Drozd shared his story:

“Sport helps me keep going. I lost my 20-year-old son in the war. After that loss, it was extremely hard. I started running, meeting fellow soldiers, and doing sports. Now I run for myself and for my son.”

The winning men’s team earned the right to represent Ukraine at the world championship, a major achievement. Women’s results will factor into rankings for the national team lineup. Athletes hailed from cities such as:
