Seven vessels hit and air defenses destroyed in Crimea: Drone strikes target Russia's shadow fleet.
Ukrainian Armed Forces operation on July 20, 2023
According to UATV: In the early hours of July 20, 2023, unmanned systems units of the Ukrainian Armed Forces struck seven vessels belonging to Russia's shadow fleet—three oil tankers and four dry cargo ships. This attack is part of a broader campaign aimed at crippling the enemy's military and energy infrastructure.
Additionally, strikes were carried out against seven electrical substations and power hubs in occupied Crimea. The operation also resulted in the destruction of six Russian air defense systems, including a Tor surface-to-air missile launcher. Since the start of July, Ukrainian drones have hit:
- 183 vessels of Russia's shadow fleet;
- more than one hundred energy facilities;
- and around thirty elements of Russian air defense.
Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces, Robert 'Madyar' Brovdy, emphasized the importance of these actions in weakening Russian military capabilities in the region.
Notably, the Kerch ferry crossing lost up to 75% of its capacity during the first two weeks of July, highlighting the significant impact of Ukrainian strikes on enemy logistics.
Impact on the conflict's trajectory
The Ukrainian Armed Forces operation—encompassing strikes on Russia's shadow fleet and energy targets—signals an intensification of military activity in the Black Sea and Crimea. The destruction of numerous vessels and air defense components reflects a strategic effort to reduce the enemy's military potential and underscores the importance of controlling supply routes. These actions may have a lasting effect on the conflict, complicating resource deliveries for Russian forces.
