What Came Out of the Latest Ukraine-Hungary Talks on Minority Rights.
Kyiv and Budapest Meet to Discuss Minority Issues
According to UATV: Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine Taras Kachka took part in negotiations between Kyiv and Budapest focused on national minorities. During the meeting, the two sides addressed matters concerning minority rights and agreed to continue working within the framework of a previously adopted action plan.
According to reports, Ukraine intends to fulfill some of its commitments as early as 2023. The Action Plan on National Minorities, approved in 2022, now serves as the foundation for further steps in this area. Kachka highlighted the constructive nature of the dialogue, stating:
'We had a very constructive conversation with the Hungarians.'
Why This Cooperation Matters
These talks represent a significant step in strengthening bilateral cooperation between Ukraine and Hungary, particularly in supporting the rights of national minorities living in both countries. Such diplomatic engagement is especially relevant as Ukraine pursues European integration, where minority protections are a key criterion.
The parties continue to address issues that could affect the well-being of national minorities, underscoring the importance of dialogue for resolving existing challenges. Collaboration between Ukraine and Hungary in this sphere could serve as a model for other nations facing similar interethnic relations issues.
