Ukraine Proposes Partial Ceasefire with Russia to Europe: Options on the Table.
Kyiv's Ceasefire Initiative
According to UATV: Ukraine has put forward a proposal to its European allies to explore various forms of a partial ceasefire with Russia. Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha made the announcement on May 29 during a speech in the Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament. The suggested measures include what is being called an 'airport ceasefire,' as well as halting strikes on seaports, energy infrastructure, and water supply systems.
Humanitarian Measures
Sybiha also highlighted potential humanitarian actions, such as the return of civilian hostages and the establishment of a humanitarian corridor from Oleshky. He emphasized:
'We propose that Europe focus its efforts on solving specific problems. These could include different types of ceasefires: from the so-called "airport ceasefire" to stopping attacks on seaports, energy, and water supply. There could also be nuclear safety or the Zaporizhzhia Nuclear Power Plant. Humanitarian steps might involve returning civilian hostages or creating a humanitarian corridor from Oleshky.' Andrii Sybiha
With this initiative, Ukraine is seeking to open a dialogue with European partners on possible paths to de-escalate the conflict and address pressing humanitarian concerns. This comes as the war with Russia continues to inflict heavy tolls on civilians and infrastructure.
The move may reflect Ukraine's desire to find compromise solutions amid the protracted war with Russia, while also drawing international attention to the humanitarian crises caused by the conflict. Discussions around various ceasefire formats, including humanitarian corridors and hostage returns, could mark a significant step toward improving conditions on the ground and reducing civilian suffering.
