Border entry hurdles grow for Ukrainians

According to Novyny.live: Ukrainian citizens are facing mounting difficulties when trying to enter Poland, especially regarding rejections for temporary protection status. Since June 2026, the number of denials has risen sharply. Polish authorities have become more stringent in scrutinizing the reasons behind Ukrainians' travel, sparking concern among those planning to relocate there.

Stricter conditions for obtaining PESEL UKR status

To qualify for PESEL UKR status, Ukrainians must meet specific criteria. The PESEL UKR number is an 11-digit code assigned to Ukrainians in Poland. To retain this status, individuals must update their personal data by August 31, 2026. Failing to do so could result in losing the status, complicating their stay in the country.

Additionally, Polish border guards now require Ukrainians to prove they have more than 75 zloty for each day of their planned stay in Poland. This added financial burden poses yet another obstacle for those seeking entry.

As a result, the situation for Ukrainians entering Poland is becoming increasingly challenging. The rise in temporary protection rejections, combined with new financial guarantee requirements, could significantly disrupt the plans of many Ukrainian citizens who intend to travel abroad.

These changes in Poland's entry policy for Ukrainians may reflect a tightening of controls by Polish authorities in response to the growing influx of refugees. This could affect not only Ukrainians but also the broader regional situation, as Poland remains a primary destination for Ukrainian refugees. Consequently, stricter requirements and more frequent denials might push many Ukrainians to seek alternative routes or remain in Ukraine amid growing uncertainty.
