Firewood Demand Doubles in Ukraine as Households Brace for Record Consumption.
Surge in Firewood Demand Across Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: A sharp increase in the demand for firewood is reshaping energy habits in Ukraine, particularly in spring 2026, with expectations of hitting an all-time high in consumption. The state-run enterprise 'Forests of Ukraine' now supplies roughly 225,000 cubic meters of firewood each month, reflecting a major push to keep households stocked with this heating fuel. Projections indicate that over 3 million cubic meters of wood for heating will be sold in 2026.
By the end of May 2026, nearly 1.1 million cubic meters of firewood had already been sold—more than double the 534,000 cubic meters moved during the same period in 2025. This dramatic leap underscores a shift in consumer behavior, with more Ukrainians turning to wood as a primary heating source. Stockpiles at storage sites currently stand at around 200,000 cubic meters, and plans call for harvesting an additional 2 million cubic meters by year's end to keep up with rising demand. Since the start of 2026, 813 contracts have been signed for the delivery of 247,000 cubic meters of wood, signaling robust market activity.
Pricing Structure and Market Outlook
Firewood prices for households in 2026 vary by category:
- Group I – 1,400 UAH per cubic meter
- Group II – 1,100 UAH per cubic meter
- Group III – 950 UAH per cubic meter
This tiered pricing reflects efforts to balance affordability with resource availability in a tightening market.
Historical sales data show a gradual decline in recent years: 2.97 million cubic meters in 2023, 2.78 million in 2024, and 2.45 million in 2025. However, the 2026 forecast of surpassing 3 million cubic meters marks a clear reversal, confirming a growing reliance on firewood for home heating.
The rising demand for firewood in Ukraine may stem from several factors, including higher prices for alternative fuels and shifts in the country's energy policy.
Looking ahead, state enterprises are expected to ramp up resource management efforts, which could also boost employment in the forestry sector. Adjusting pricing strategies to meet public needs may further stabilize the wood market during this period of heightened demand.
