136,000 Ukrainians Cross the Border Daily as Exodus Surges.
Border Crossing Numbers Spike Across Ukraine
According to Novyny.live: During the summer months, the volume of people moving through Ukraine’s state border has increased significantly, driven by a rise in international travel. Official figures show that on weekdays, between 115,000 and 120,000 individuals cross the frontier, while on weekends that number jumps to 130,000–136,000. This trend highlights a growing public interest in leaving the country, resulting in a net outflow of 10,000 to 20,000 more people exiting Ukraine than returning each day.
Traffic Intensity at Key Border Points
The busiest crossing point remains the Polish border, which handles the heaviest traffic. Approximately 500 buses depart Ukraine each day, with weekend numbers climbing to 580. For context, the daily bus departure count previously stood at around 350, marking a substantial increase in passenger transport.
In June alone, authorities detained over 800 individuals attempting to breach the border illegally. Andriy Demchenko noted that
“the number of attempts to cross the border illegally remains steady”. He also observed that
“the activity of sabotage and reconnaissance groups in Chernihiv region has decreased”, suggesting an improvement in security conditions in that area.
In response to these developments, state agencies continue to monitor the border situation and implement measures to maintain security. The summer surge in passenger traffic is driven not only by vacation travel but also by Ukrainians seeking to visit relatives, friends, and acquaintances abroad. These factors are reshaping the dynamics at the national border, requiring relevant authorities to adapt to new circumstances.
The rising number of border crossings underscores the need for ongoing surveillance and flexible security responses from government bodies. As more Ukrainians travel overseas, maintaining oversight of potential violations and adjusting to shifting conditions in border regions becomes essential. This heightened border activity carries both economic and social implications for Ukraine, affecting labor migration patterns and ties with the diaspora.
