According to Novyny.live: A Ukrainian national veterans team is preparing to compete in the Marine Corps Trials and Air Force Trials in the United States. Their qualification pathway was the inaugural 'Hart' national multi-sport event for veterans, which allowed participants to showcase their athletic prowess and train for the upcoming international stage. Adaptive sports competitions like these are increasingly recognized globally for their role in veteran rehabilitation and community building.
The Journey of Veteran Serhii Hurduza
One of the athletes who competed at 'Hart' is Serhii Hurduza. He served in the Ukrainian Armed Forces from 2014 to 2017 and again from 2021 to 2025. During his service, he saw combat on the Donetsk front in several key locations, including:
- Horlivka
- Debaltseve
- Avdiivka
- Kryvorizhzhia
- Kherson region
Despite undergoing two spinal surgeries, Serhii refused to give up. He maintains an active lifestyle, playing volleyball four to five times a week.
The U.S. competitions are scheduled to begin in a matter of weeks. The formation and participation of the Ukrainian team is supported by the country's Ministry for Veterans Affairs. Serhii emphasizes the significance of his role, stating:
'We must understand that we are representing our country.' - Serhii Hurduza
He also shares his personal struggles: 'I thought it would be hard to walk,' adding, 'It was very difficult for me, and honestly, I thought I wouldn't make it.' Despite these challenges, Serhii is convinced that sport is vital for maintaining spirit: 'To play sports, not to lose heart, to believe in yourself and not to give up.'
Through their preparation, Ukrainian veterans like Serhii Hurduza demonstrate remarkable resilience and determination. They hope for a successful performance in the United States and for continued support from their nation.
This international participation highlights more than just athletic achievement; it serves as a powerful symbol of recovery and adaptation following military trauma. Such events are crucial for boosting veteran morale and raising public awareness of their ongoing needs and challenges, potentially creating a platform for enhanced societal and governmental support.
