'Family Album' Documentary Screening

According to UATV: A new partnership between Ukraine's state-run 'Multimedia Platform for Foreign Broadcasting' and the news channel DNews will bring Ukrainian documentary films to South American audiences. The first film to be broadcast is 'Family Album,' directed by Marina Tkachuk. The film explores the historical parallels between the Holodomor famine and Russia's current war against Ukraine through the family history of British photo artist Samara Pearce. This initial broadcast took place in Argentina, Uruguay, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru, timed to mark the fourth anniversary of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The Holodomor, a man-made famine in Soviet Ukraine, is recognized by many countries as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.

Future Broadcasts and International Premiere

DNews, which launched in summer 2022, plans to follow this with screenings of other Ukrainian documentaries, including:

  • 'The Second Front'
  • 'Warriors of Science'
  • 'Battle for History'

'Family Album' had its international premiere in October 2024 at the 40th Warsaw International Film Festival. It has already been shown in numerous countries across Europe, Africa, Asia, the Americas, and Australia, demonstrating its global reach and relevance.

The 'Family Album' project was the winner of a competition held by the Multimedia Platform for Foreign Broadcasting of Ukraine. It was produced by the company Good Morning Distribution on behalf of the platform. Key production participants include: producer Andriy Kornienko, executive producer Zlata Efimenko, director of photography Vyacheslav Rakovsky, cameraman Kyrylo Nikrashevych, composer Hossein Mirzagoli, film editor Oleksiy Taranenko, sound designer Andriy Obod, sound engineer Ivan Pozdnishev, and historical consultant Yana Hrynko.

The South American broadcast of 'Family Album' highlights the growing international attention on Ukrainian narratives, particularly in the context of the ongoing war. This partnership with DNews opens new avenues for distributing Ukrainian content globally, which is crucial for the country's cultural diplomacy and for fostering a deeper understanding of its history and current struggle.
