According to The Sun: TWO-TIME Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova retired from professional tennis, shedding tears in her last-ever appearance.
Petra Kvitova, who won Wimbledon twice, announced her retirement from professional tennis, shedding tears in her final match.
Kvitova, at the age of 35, suffered a defeat with a score of 6-1 6-0 against Dianne Parry on the Grandstand arena during the second day of competition at Flushing Meadows.
For the Czech star, it was a somewhat disappointing exit, as only a few hundred fans watched her last match due to transport chaos that complicated entry for spectators.
Petra Kvitova, who turned professional in 2006, used a protected ranking to enter the main draw of the US Open and tearfully acknowledged after her loss: 'Thank you for coming. I had hoped to play better today, but it was very hard to realize that this might be my last match. It was emotionally very difficult.'
Her opponent, 22-year-old Dianne Parry from Nice, expressed her respect for Kvitova, saying: 'I have a lot of respect for her and her incredible career. I wish her all the best in the future.'
Kvitova's career was marred by an attack in December 2016, during which she sustained serious injuries to her hand. Despite this, she made an impressive comeback and achieved significant milestones in the sport, including Olympic bronze and second place at the 2019 Australian Open.
