Putin uses nuclear weapons to deter the West - report

Russian dictator Vladimir Putin continues to use the tactic of nuclear saber-rattling to deter the West and influence the decision-making process in their countries, the Institute for the Study of War reported.

The report referred to Putin's statement that if the US deploys long-range missile systems in Germany, the flight Time to Russian targets would be about 10 minutes, and that Russia would withdraw from the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty.

"Putin mistakenly attempts to present Russia's deployment of missiles banned by the INF Treaty, likely as part of his ongoing efforts aimed at using nuclear saber-rattling to push the West into forced containment," the report says.

In June, the US and Germany announced the start of the "episodic deployment" of long-range firepower systems on German territory. Such steps are meant to demonstrate the US commitment to NATO. Additionally, the US deployed medium-range missile systems in Denmark and the Philippines as part of joint exercises.
