Ukraine Overhauls Driver’s License Rules: New Validity Periods and Medical Checks Introduced.
Ukraine’s Updated Driver’s License Regulations
According to Espreso.tv: The Ukrainian government has approved amendments to driver’s license issuance rules, introducing new validity periods and mandatory medical examinations. Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko announced that licenses for motorcycles and passenger cars will now be valid for 15 years, while those for freight and passenger transport vehicles will be issued for 5 years.
Under the updated regulations, drivers must undergo medical check-ups every 15 years. For those involved in commercial transportation, license renewal is required every five years, accompanied by a mandatory medical examination. Previously issued permanent licenses remain valid until the expiration date indicated on the document. When exchanging a license, no driving tests are required unless otherwise stipulated by law.
“The primary goal of these changes is to gradually align Ukrainian regulations with European standards and enhance road safety.”
Ihor Klymenko
Klymenko also emphasized that “special attention is given to drivers engaged in passenger and freight transport.” These updates reflect European practices and are expected to improve road safety across the country.
Positive Impact of the Changes
The revised driver’s license rules mark a significant step toward harmonizing Ukrainian legislation with European road safety standards. This could help reduce the number of traffic accidents, as regular medical check-ups will enable early detection of health issues among drivers.
Stricter requirements for professional drivers involved in transportation services may further contribute to enhanced road safety nationwide.
