Scientists Debunk Myth of Spider Eggs in Bananas.
Recently, information spread on the internet that bananas could contain spider eggs. This news caused a wave of panic among consumers. However, scientists claim that this is an unfounded fear. This is reported by IFLScience.
Spider eggs simply cannot get into a banana.
Rod Crawford, an expert on arachnids at the Burke Museum in Seattle, who studies spiders and debunks myths about them, claims that spider eggs cannot be inside a banana.
He believes that this is just one of the recent urban legends that appeared around the year 2000.
Although there are occasional cases of spiders being found on bananas during transportation, this is rare. Usually, these are Brazilian wandering spiders, which, by the way, are not that dangerous.
Why did the myth about spider eggs in bananas appear?
The panic is likely related to some people believing that spiders can lay eggs in the blossoms of banana trees, which then end up inside the fruit. But, as Crawford explains, this is impossible, as banana blossoms are narrow tubes, and the fruit grows from the ovary inward.
Even if spider eggs somehow got inside a banana, they would not harm human health.
