In the Amazon, a fish with a mysterious 'veil' was found: what scientists discovered.
According to ТСН: Scientists made an important discovery by identifying two new species of fish in the tropical forests of the Amazon, which have an unusual body structure that has not been documented before.
These are miniature representatives of the genus Priocharax, which do not exceed 2.5 centimeters in length.
Unusual Structure
These fish have a thin skin membrane in the shape of a disc between their pelvic fins, creating a special 'veil' under the body of the fish. This anatomical structure has not been noticed among such small species before.
The discovery challenges the stereotype that small organisms evolve by losing complex structural elements. On the contrary, the new species indicate a high level of morphological complexity.
Research and Importance of Conservation
Researchers from the Federal University of São Carlos analyzed materials from recent expeditions and museum specimens, confirming the existence of Priocharax in this region. They emphasized that the sampling sites are located near protected natural areas in Brazil, indicating the importance of such zones for biodiversity conservation.
The discovery highlights the need for further research in the Amazon and the conservation of rare species, particularly Priocharax rex. The function of the unusual membrane between the fins remains a mystery.
Scientists' Hypotheses
Experts believe that this structure may be related to the mating behavior of fish, serving as a means of communication or helping the fish stabilize movement while swimming close to the riverbed. Additional observations in their natural habitat are needed to confirm these hypotheses.
The new species were discovered in a darkwater river in southern Colombia, near the town of San Rafael. Scientists plan to return to this region for further research.
These new findings not only enrich our understanding of the biodiversity of the Amazon but also highlight the need to protect unique ecosystems. In the face of climate change and human intervention, preserving the diversity of species such as Priocharax becomes particularly important.
