Russian Oil Tanker Seized by UK in the English Channel: Inside the Operation.
Russian Tanker Detained in UK Waters
According to UATV: British authorities have intercepted a Russian oil tanker attempting to transit the English Channel. The vessel, identified as 'Smirtos,' was sailing under the flag of Cameroon. This operation forms part of the UK's broader strategy to prevent efforts to bypass restrictions on Russian oil exports.
Keir Starmer, leader of the Labour Party, confirmed that the detained 'Smirtos' was indeed operating under a Cameroonian flag. The seizure was made possible under the European Union’s 21st sanctions package, which targets multiple sectors including energy, finance, trade, and—for the first time—fisheries. These measures are designed to reinforce sanctions against Russia as part of global efforts to apply economic pressure on the country.
Reactions to the Seizure
The detention of the 'Smirtos' underscores the international community's active role in combating sanctions evasion linked to Russia’s aggressive policies. It also highlights the UK’s commitment, as part of the European Union, to limiting Russia’s access to global energy markets.
As sanctions continue to expand, similar operations may become more frequent in the global fight to counter Russia's economic influence.
