“What have I proven to myself?” asked the two-time US Open champion, wiping away tears.
“For me, returning to the court meant giving myself a chance to play healthier. When you play not at your best, it feels not only physical but also psychological. It felt nice to feel freer.”
Williams has been suffering from Sjögren's syndrome for over a decade — an exhausting autoimmune disease that causes joint pain.
She also noted that she does not plan to travel too far from the United States if she decides to continue her career.
“Are there any tournaments in the USA? Maybe someone will move a tournament here?”
Future Prospects
“I don’t know if I’m ready to travel that far at this stage of my career,” added Williams.
“I love playing. The level of my game has significantly improved since D.C. I’ve tried my best to eliminate old shortcomings, but there’s only so much you can achieve in three or four matches.”
“My goal is to do what I want. I wanted to be here this summer. I’m grateful to everyone who gave me a wild card.”
Later, she commented on her potential participation in the Australian Open in January.
“Is there anything? I don't play at high altitude, so I won’t go to Guadalajara. Australia is too far.”
Venus Williams' exit from the US Open highlights her indomitable spirit and desire to continue competing despite the challenges. Her determination to remain active in professional tennis, as well as her wish to play on home soil, opens new opportunities for future tournaments. It remains to be seen what her next steps will be and the possibility of returning to the courts in the new season.
