Ukrainian Parliament Rejects Proposal to Honor Skeleton Athlete Vladyslav Heraskevych.
Proposal to Honor Vladyslav Heraskevych
According to Novyny.live: The Verkhovna Rada, Ukraine's parliament, considered a request to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to award skeleton racer Vladyslav Heraskevych the Order of Merit. The proposal, however, failed to secure the required number of votes to pass. Only 66 lawmakers supported the motion, while 5 voted against it, 12 abstained, and a significant 175 deputies did not participate in the vote at all.
Vladyslav Heraskevych's Reaction
Vladyslav Heraskevych, who is known internationally for his political activism at the Olympics, responded to the vote by posting a pointed comment on Instagram. He wrote:
"But he did vote to strip the powers of NABU and SAPO" - Vladyslav Heraskevych
This remark references the position of MP Vasyl Virastyuk, who supported initiatives to curtail the authority of Ukraine's National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NABU) and the Specialized Anti-Corruption Prosecutor's Office (SAPO). This context highlights the ongoing political tensions in Ukraine between anti-corruption efforts and other legislative priorities.
Consequently, the attempt to honor Heraskevych did not gain sufficient backing among parliamentarians, underscoring the complex political dynamics within the country's legislature.
This incident illustrates not only the challenging decision-making process within the Verkhovna Rada but also potential contradictions between supporting sports figures and political stances. The refusal to grant the award may indicate that many lawmakers are focused on other priorities they deem more pressing for society. Simultaneously, Heraskevych's reaction demonstrates that anti-corruption policy remains a central and contentious issue for both Ukrainian citizens and their elected officials.
