According to Novyny.live: On March 17, Ihor Mykhailenko, call sign 'Cherkas,' assumed command of the 53rd Separate Mechanized Brigade within Ukraine’s Third Army Corps. This appointment came just days after the Third Army Corps marked its first anniversary on March 14, highlighting a period of transition and reinforcement for the unit.

Combat Career

Born on February 19, 1988, in Kharkiv, Mykhailenko began his military journey in 2014 when he joined the Azov unit. That summer, he led an assault group during the liberation of Mariupol—a pivotal moment that shaped his career. Following Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022, he commanded the Special Operations Forces unit ‘Azov-Kyiv.’ Since 2023, he has served as deputy commander of the 3rd Separate Assault Brigade, a role that underscores his extensive experience and expertise.

Reflecting on his new responsibilities, Ihor Mykhailenko stated:

'My objective as the new commander of the 53rd Separate Mechanized Brigade is to align the unit with the corps structure and enhance leadership by applying the proven methods of the 3rd Assault Brigade, which have demonstrated their effectiveness in modern warfare.'
