Victoria's Secret has resumed shows. Why critics did not appreciate the return of the show.
After a six-year hiatus, a Victoria's Secret lingerie show took place. Leading models of all sizes from around the world returned to the runway. But calling this return triumphant is difficult, according to leading media outlets and fashion experts.
The annual Victoria's Secret show was held from 1995 to 2018. After that, the creators were forced to take a break: broadcast ratings fell threefold, and the brand's owners were regularly accused of sexism, not being in tune with the times, and not having a sufficiently representative selection of models.
The father-founder of the fashion show, Edward Razek, did not hide his views, which were called politically incorrect. In 2018, when asked whether transsexuals should be brought to the runway, he replied:
No, I don't think it's necessary, - Razek responded to his critics and added - Our show is a fantasy. It is a 42-minute entertainment show.
He also stated that in 2000 there was an attempt to make a special edition for plus-size models, but according to him, "the project did not spark interest and still doesn't."
Then critics slammed the interview and accused it of "creating a culture of harassment and misogyny." Soon after, he had to resign.
After five years, the show returned in a new format. The show took place in New York, where 50-year-old supermodel Kate Moss debuted as a Victoria's Secret model, alongside her 22-year-old daughter Lila. Show organizers promised to take into account the fair remarks of critics - and, in particular, assured that there would be models of various sizes on the runway.
The headline of the fashion show review in the New York Times states, "The Victoria's Secret Show is Back. And for Nothing." Some experts believe that merely having models of various sizes on the runway is insufficient.
According to some estimates, since the show aired, interest in the Victoria's Secret brand has increased by approximately 13%.
Also in Paris, Fashion Week has started. On the first day of the show at the National Paris Opera, the fashion house L'Oreal showcased its dresses. Kendall Jenner and Cara Delevingne impressed the audience with bold looks, and Eva Longoria and Jane Fonda donned equally luxurious dresses during the Walk Your Worth show as part of the women's ready-to-wear spring-summer "2025 Collection."
