Trump on Russia's advice regarding Ukraine: this is standard negotiation.
According to ТСН: U.S. President Donald Trump commented on the information from a Bloomberg transcript, in which special representative Steve Witkoff allegedly advises the Russians on how to attract the attention of the American president.
Trump expressed his opinion to reporters during a flight aboard Air Force 1. According to him, there is nothing unusual in Witkoff's actions.
“Because he needs to 'sell' this to Ukraine. He needs to 'sell' Ukraine to Russia. That is how a broker works in negotiations. You have to say, 'Look, they want this.' This is a standard form of negotiation. You have to convince them of this,” the U.S. president explained.
Trump also noted that he has not heard the audio recording himself but believes that there is nothing beyond the practice of negotiations.
“I haven’t heard it, but I’ve heard it is ordinary negotiations. And I can imagine he is saying the same thing to Ukraine, because both sides have to give something up and gain something,” Trump summarized.
It was previously reported that Trump’s special representative Steve Witkoff had a short phone conversation with Yuri Ushakov, Putin's main foreign policy advisor. He gave advice on how Moscow should present a plan regarding Ukraine to Trump.
Subsequently, a representative of the Russian dictator, Kiril Dmitriev, called Bloomberg's statement fake, denying that Steve Witkoff consulted with the Russians on presenting U.S. President Donald Trump with a 'peace plan' for Ukraine.
In the situation that unfolded, it is important to consider that diplomatic maneuvers and consultations between states are standard practice. Trump's position regarding Witkoff reflects his perception of international negotiations, where compromises and agreements are key. The Russian side's reaction to Bloomberg's information also indicates how delicately both countries approach public statements and diplomatic relations.
