The Russian government plans to change the payment system for military personnel injured in combat, depending on the severity of the injury. From now on, compensations will be linked to the severity of injuries, Russian media reports.

These changes will not only apply to compensations for soldiers wounded in the war with Ukraine. Currently, such soldiers receive a fixed amount of 3 million rubles ($0.031 million), and an additional 2.9 million rubles ($0.030 million) if they are deemed unfit for service. After implementing the new system, standard insurance payments for minor injuries will exceed 81.8 thousand rubles ($0.84 thousand), and for severe ones, around 327.3 thousand rubles ($3.35 thousand). Additionally, regional bonuses are provided.

According to the Russian Social Fund, by 2023, the number of disability pension recipients increased by 91.7 thousand people. The total number of disabled pensioners is 2.225 million, which is the highest level in the past seven years.

The Ministry of Social Protection forecasts that annually, around 60-70 thousand amputees in Russia will need prosthetics.

Additionally, journalists found that relatives of deceased Russian soldiers who receive burial money often spend it on real estate or luxury cars, reports The New York Times.

Economic Situation

The Russian Federation continues its military aggression against Ukraine despite the negative economic impact. The Kremlin is preparing regions for economic restrictions that will be necessary to fund the war. This concerns the social protection project for the disabled, which forecasts an increase in the number of amputees and, consequently, the need for prosthetics.

Recently, the Speaker of the Federation Council of Russia, Valentina Matviyenko, urged governors to save money since part of the state budget will be allocated to the continuation of the war.
