For the First Time, Ukraine’s Navy Granted Authority to Command NATO Mine-Countermeasure Forces.
Taking the Helm of NATO Mine-Countermeasure Units
According to UATV: Ukraine’s naval forces have earned the right to lead NATO mine-countermeasure units after successfully passing a NATO-standard evaluation during the Sea Breeze 2026 exercises. This milestone caps a three-year preparation period aimed at integrating Ukraine into NATO’s force command structure, marking a significant step in the country’s alignment with alliance protocols.
During Sea Breeze 2026, Ukrainian personnel demonstrated their readiness to operate within multinational coalitions. As a result, the Ukrainian Navy achieved a “Mission Capable” status, confirming its ability to contribute effectively to alliance missions. This accomplishment highlights the deepening security and defense cooperation between Ukraine and NATO.
Transfer of a Mine-Countermeasure Vessel
In a related development, the Netherlands will transfer the mine-countermeasure ship Zr. Ms. Makkum to Ukraine, where it is slated to be renamed ‘Henichesk’. This vessel is expected to become a cornerstone of Ukraine’s mine-countermeasure capabilities and will participate in the Sea Breeze 2027 exercises. Acquiring this ship will enable Ukraine to enhance the effectiveness of its maritime operations.
Together, the successful evaluation at Sea Breeze 2026 and the handover of the Zr. Ms. Makkum represent landmark events for the Ukrainian Navy as it moves toward deeper NATO integration.
These developments underscore Ukraine’s progress in adapting to NATO standards and strengthening its armed forces’ capabilities. The introduction of advanced technologies and assets, such as the mine-countermeasure ship, will bolster the country’s defense posture amid contemporary security challenges.
Ongoing steps in NATO collaboration reflect Ukraine’s serious commitment to integrating into the European and transatlantic security framework.
