Wolf Moon and Quadrantid Meteor Shower: What Ukrainians Will See on the Night of January 3rd.
According to ТСН: Tonight, Ukrainians will have the opportunity to enjoy the first full moon of 2026, known as the Wolf Moon, as well as the Quadrantid meteor shower.
Supermoon and Its Features
A supermoon occurs when the full moon approaches Earth in its orbit. According to NASA, during such an event, the moon can appear up to 14% larger and 30% brighter compared to the smallest moon of the year.
Supermoons, like regular full moons, can be observed from a clear sky in any location with minimal light pollution.
Quadrantid Meteor Shower
This year, the peak of one of the brightest meteor showers, the Quadrantids, is expected today. It can primarily be observed from the Northern Hemisphere. Both the full moon and the meteor shower are available for observation without the need for any special equipment.
Meteor showers occur when fast-moving celestial bodies penetrate Earth's atmosphere, burn up, and leave bright trails resembling falling stars. A few meteors can be seen on any night, but special showers appear annually when our planet passes through dense layers of space debris.
Upcoming Astronomical Events
The next major meteor shower, the Lyrids, will take place in early April. The second supermoon of 2026 is expected at the end of the year.
It should be noted that the Wolf Full Moon will occur on January 3, 2026. This name was given to the moon not for astrological reasons, but based on ancient observations of nature and daily life during the winter season.
Observing such astronomical phenomena is not only captivating but also provides an opportunity to learn more about our universe. The Wolf Moon and the Quadrantid meteor shower are a wonderful chance for all interested to explore the mysteries of space and enjoy the beauty of the night sky. Such events usually bring people together, providing unforgettable moments of shared fascination.
