Approximately 35,000 visitors are expected to travel to the region for the event. According to forecasts, at 4:17 PM on July 22, 2028, the moon will completely cover the sun in southern New Zealand.

Ian Griffin remarked, "The last total solar eclipse visible from Dunedin took place in 1163, long before humans arrived in New Zealand."

Eclipse Characteristics and Path

The path of totality, where the full eclipse can be observed, will be roughly 100 kilometers wide. Within this band, darkness will last for 2 minutes and 51 seconds. This will be the first total solar eclipse viewable from New Zealand since 1965.
