Trump Restricts Transgender Rights: How Changes Affect Millions of Americans.
Trump's Attitude Towards Transgender People
According to Vox: When Donald Trump became president in 2017, it was not obvious that the transgender community had concerns. Prior to his presidency, he had mostly expressed positive or at least tolerant views regarding LGBTQ+ individuals. For example, he emphasized that he had no problem hiring gays and supported amendments to the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to explicitly prohibit discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation. He also lifted the ban on transgender participation in his beauty pageants, took a stand against North Carolina's 'bathroom' amendment, and assured that his wife, transgender reality star Caitlyn Jenner, could use any bathroom in Trump Tower. Trump positioned himself as an 'ally' of the LGBTQ+ community.
However, during his first term, he enacted several anti-trans measures, including a ban on transgender service in the military and the repeal of protections against discrimination in healthcare.
Anti-Trans Rhetoric During the 2024 Campaign
In the 2024 election campaign, rhetoric against 'radical gender ideology' became more hostile. Trump's often-aired campaign ads claim that 'Kamala is for they/them. Trump is for you'. As his second term approaches, Trump's attacks on transgender rights have become even harsher.
Today, Explained host Noel King spoke with Kate Sosin, who covers LGBTQ+ issues for The 19th, about how the Trump administration's anti-trans policies affect transgender Americans.
Below is an excerpt from their conversation, edited for clarity. More details can be found in the full podcast, listen to Today, Explained anywhere.
Changes During Trump's Term
Trump is often regarded as the most anti-LGBTQ+ president in history, largely due to his approach to transgender rights. In 2017, when he first took office, it was unclear how he would address LGBTQ+ issues. But over time, he significantly escalated his anti-trans rhetoric. Politically speaking, policies regarding transgender issues only increased.
From day one of his presidency, Trump signed an executive order in which his administration recognized only two genders: male and female. This definition effectively erased transgender individuals from public life.
Restrictions on Access to Healthcare
The Trump administration also limited access to gender-affirming medical services for youth and rescinded federal funding for medical institutions that provide them. This resulted in a decrease in the number of hospitals and clinics offering such services.
Passport Issues for Transgender Individuals
Regarding obtaining passports, the Trump administration did not accept changes to gender markers. This caused serious problems as many individuals were left without administrative documents, putting them in vulnerable situations.
Conclusions
Over the past 10 months, life for transgender individuals during Trump's second term has become markedly more difficult. Many parents of trans children are leaving the country or planning to do so as they cannot obtain necessary medical care and fear for their safety. The sense of danger among transgender people leaves a profound impact!
The election of Donald Trump for a new term may affect the legal status of transgender individuals, their access to healthcare, and overall security conditions. This situation concerns not only the United States but also the global community, as transgender rights remain a vital issue in the struggle for equality.
