How to keep flour at home to avoid bugs
Remember that it is better not to leave flour in its original packaging, as these bags do not protect against moisture, air exposure, or insect infestations. Moreover, a paper bag can easily become soggy or even tear.
To prevent this, as soon as you bring flour from the store, transfer it to an airtight container. These can be:
- Glass jars with a tight lid
- Plastic containers designed for storing bulk products
- Vacuum bags or containers with a valve
However, before transferring the flour, place it in the freezer for 48 hours to eliminate any potential insect eggs. After that, dry it and store it either in the freezer or cupboard.
Choosing the right storage place
Experts recommend keeping flour in a cool, dry, and dark place as sunlight and heat can cause it to spoil faster and lead to the development of fungi and bacteria. Suitable places include:
- A kitchen cupboard located away from the stove
- A pantry
- A freezer or refrigerator
A refrigerator or freezer slows down the oxidation process and kills pests' larvae, but to avoid transferring any unwanted odors to the flour, close the container tightly. When you take flour out of the cold, wait for it to fully thaw before opening the container.
