Prosecutors Charge Transcarpathian Councilman for Hiding Millions in Assets.
Berehove District Council Member Under Scrutiny
According to Novyny.live: The Transcarpathian Regional Prosecutor's Office has formally charged a member of the Berehove District Council with tax evasion exceeding 8.3 million hryvnias and submitting a false asset declaration. The official is accused of failing to declare millions in hryvnia, luxury vehicles, and a house. This case highlights ongoing efforts in Ukraine to enforce financial transparency among public officials.
In his 2022 declaration, the councilman omitted property and income valued at over 8.3 million hryvnias. Specifically, in October 2022, he purchased a Mercedes-Benz S-Class for 3.75 million hryvnias. Over the past 20 years, his officially declared income totals less than 227 thousand hryvnias, raising serious questions about the origin of his wealth.
Charges Include Money Laundering
The case has been classified as involving the legalization of criminally obtained property and the submission of false information. The pre-trial investigation is being conducted by detectives from the Main Directorate of the National Police in the Transcarpathian region. Such violations of asset declaration laws are becoming increasingly common, causing significant public concern.
This incident underscores the critical importance of compliance with income and asset declaration laws, particularly for those in public office.
Thorough investigation and exposure of such offenses can help rebuild public trust in state institutions and improve financial transparency in Ukraine. It is vital that these cases receive proper attention, as they can influence the broader political climate in the region.
