Dual Citizenship Law in Effect: Ukrainians Can Now Obtain EU Passports Without Penalties.
New Legislation on Multiple Citizenship
According to Novyny.live: Starting January 16, 2026, Ukrainians will be able to acquire citizenship in European Union countries without facing sanctions, thanks to a new law on multiple citizenship. The Czech Republic is among five nations where this option becomes available, alongside Canada, Poland, Germany, and the United States. Under Law No. 4502-IX, Ukrainians can easily apply for citizenship in these countries, unlocking fresh opportunities for mobility and life abroad. This change marks a significant shift in Ukraine's approach to citizenship, aligning with global trends toward greater flexibility for its citizens.
Cost of a Czech Passport in 2026
What will a Czech passport cost in 2026? For adults, the fee is set at 600 Czech crowns, roughly equivalent to 1,235 Ukrainian hryvnias. Children under 15 will pay significantly less—just 100 crowns, or about 205 hryvnias. However, Ukrainians seeking faster processing can opt for expedited services. A passport issued within 24 hours will cost adults 6,000 crowns (12,350 hryvnias) and children 2,000 crowns (4,100 hryvnias). For processing within five business days, the fee drops to 3,000 crowns (6,200 hryvnias) for adults and 1,000 crowns (2,050 hryvnias) for children.
Obtaining a second citizenship represents a vital opportunity for Ukrainians to gain new status in various countries. The list of nations participating in the multiple citizenship mechanism has been approved by Cabinet of Ministers Resolution No. 1412. This opens up new horizons for Ukrainians who wish to live, work, or study abroad while retaining their rights as Ukrainian citizens.
What else should Ukrainians know? With the introduction of the multiple citizenship law, they will gain greater prospects for career development and personal growth on an international scale. This is a crucial step toward integrating Ukraine into European society, potentially boosting the country's economic and social development.
The enactment of the multiple citizenship law could mark a major milestone in Ukraine's migration policy, improving conditions for citizens seeking new opportunities overseas.
Access to citizenship in other countries may accelerate integration processes and strengthen ties between Ukraine and European states. It could simplify not only job searches but also educational pursuits, while fostering new cultural and social exchanges.
