Ukraine's Dual Citizenship Law Takes Effect: Initial Partner Countries Announced.
Ukraine's New Law on Multiple Citizenship
According to Novyny.live: Law No. 4502-IX, which came into force on January 16, 2026, allows Ukrainian citizens to acquire citizenship of another state without having to renounce their Ukrainian nationality. This legislation establishes the conditions and procedures for multiple citizenship, opening up new possibilities for Ukrainians. This marks a significant policy shift for a country that has historically restricted dual citizenship.
The first countries to join this framework are:
- Canada
- Germany
- Poland
- United States
- Czech Republic
This means Ukrainians wishing to obtain citizenship in these nations can do so without losing their Ukrainian passport. Importantly, in accordance with Decree No. 1412, which also took effect on January 16, 2026, citizens of these listed countries can now obtain a Ukrainian passport through a simplified procedure, creating a reciprocal arrangement.
Opportunities for Ukrainian Citizens
The list of countries permitting dual citizenship with Ukraine is expected to expand gradually, providing Ukrainians with greater opportunities for integration and participation in international life. Law No. 4502-IX represents a major step toward simplifying citizenship acquisition and facilitating the mobility of Ukrainian citizens abroad. This change aligns with global trends where many nations recognize the benefits of multiple citizenships for their diasporas.
This law could significantly impact the lives of Ukrainians by ensuring new opportunities for employment, education, and business in other countries while retaining their Ukrainian citizenship.
Expanding the list of countries supporting multiple citizenship may help strengthen international ties and elevate Ukraine's standing on the global stage.
